Order of the Vulture – Martyr for Nothing Box Set

A special project for Portland’s ORDER OF THE VULTURE; this was in conjunction with a 7″ EP release we did on my record label Aborted Society. ABSOC releases typically have some sort of limited edition run where we take a handful of the color vinyl release and do something special, and my partner Matt and I had a crazy idea to make a box from scratch.

With the help of our friend Brandon (Print’s Not Dead), we hand constructed and glued 50 boxes and lids made out of rosewood. We had Order of the Vulture’s iconic “O” logo machined into a brand with the help of our welder buddy Taarna Grimsley, who had access to a CNC machine to forge the brand. Each lid of the box was literally branded (cow-style) with the logo brand heated up by a blowtorch, and then we scorched the outer edges of the box and lid with the blowtorch as well to give it a more weathered feel. After all of this was complete, we stained each box prior to assembly.

This particular run of the record also included a limited and hand-numbered silk screened cover which sat inside, and the whole idea was to have the box unravel in a series of layers as you opened it.  To finish everything off, we took some standard jute twine and dyed it black with fabric dye, and hand tied the lids to the boxes.  All in all it was an intense process, but super fun and a memorable moment for the band and label.
